On The Event of Doing Something
On The Event of Doing Something
Time:2011/09/10-2011/09/10
Address:Platform China Contemporary Art Institute (Beijing)

The performers are to devise a personal and intuitive approach on their own terms. The sound content to which the instructions apply are often to be decided by those who interpret and perform a score. The performances are site specific; performers and audience are positioned in spatialised configurations to create a gradation of distance, movement and perspective in sound.

The event will host three performances;

. 'a situation of rumor' for 7 untrained voices.
7 performers create a vocal field of voice sounds based on a random sentence of 7 syllables they choose beforehand. They are not allowed to sing...

. 'branching into others' for an undefined group of instruments.
a large group of performers is positioned over an area where they can hear but not necessarily see each other. The group slowly and collectively works from very short quiet sounds to a continuous and loud sound sculpture

. 'in strings of two' for 4 Shengs
4 performers of the Chinese Sheng play long sustaining tones for a long time, slowly passing on and changing the single tones into sound modulations and clusters

The performers include, a.o. Shimuzi Megumi, Gerard Altaio, Lin Chiwei, Stephen Roach, Li Tieqiao,  Xiao He, Man Yu, Bruce Gremo, Li Zenghui, Gogoj, Xv Jianli, Marie Claude LeBel.

Martijn Tellinga (1974,Netherlands) is a composer and performer of sound and acoustical situations. His work renders an ongoing meditation on the rudimentary condition of the sonic arts. He aims to establish an artistic idiom that draws on the exploration of the workings of composition and performance as material for an autonomous practice in sound. This practice includes a wide variety of conceptual actions and chance operations.

In his work, parameters of aural and spatial perception are closely connected. It focusses on the perceptive field between intended listening and accidental hearing, on the expression of space by means of sound and on intuitive intervention of (music) systems.  He employs different sound and performance media and draws on a reduced formalist-seeming vocabulary to define and overcome such processes.

He has produced works for acoustical performers, for music machines, has created soundsculptures, performance installations, constructivist plays and radio-installments. His work has been performed and exhibited worldwide. He collaborated with a.o. James Beckett, Dante Boon, Dextro, James Fulkerson, Sagi Groner, Robin Hayward, Jon Mueller, Koen Nutters. He is co-curator for the acclaimed series DNK [Amsterdam].

The past year he lived and worked inBeijing. In this period, he was a visiting lecturer on Sound Art at Shenyang Conservatory.
